My Word document looks fine in print preview. It prints out OK on my printer. But the conversion to PDF from the pulldown menu in Word fails after converting one page. The Distiller aborts after an "Error Undefined: Offending Command; @#$%" [Unspecified].

Sometthing is going on with your Word file. Could be fonts, images, or some aspect of the layout. You need to carefully diagnose the Wortd file and make sure the layout is properly set up.

Try printing to PostScript and Distilling the file. See if a PDF can be created with alternate methods and you'll know whether the issue resides with the PDFMaker or not.
