When adding files (pdf files only) to a portfolio, I would like to maintain linked relationships only to keep data consistency when having the root file udpated.
Is that possible?

Sorry, no it's not. Acrobat has no concept of member files in a portfolio being "related" in any way, they are each treated as individual documents and from the standpoint of scripts and forms, cannot see each other. They can all see their parent portfolio, so it is possible to pass data between them using scripts within the parent - but to do that each document has to be written specifically to work that way. Acrobat doesn't alter anything during the process of assembling a portfolio.
