Creating hyperlinks from text on the Welcome page

I am creating a portfolio of my artwork and I read in an article in Computer Arts Projects Magazine issue 114 that you can highlight text on the Welcome page and create a link to send an email or download a v-card. It gave instructions on how to do it, but it doesn't work for me. I am on a Mac using Acrobat 9. Very frustrating. Please help!
