Ordering files and folders in Portfolio

I tried to figure out how to move files and folders into the order that I wanted them in the Portfolio. I tried drag-and-drop, but I realized that they were being arranged alphabetically, because that is the default setting in File Details.

I went to the Specify File Details tab in the lower right, and added a new column, called Order. Then I assigned each file or folder a number. Now they line up the way I want.

1. Go to "EDIT PDF PORTFOLIO" panel > "SPECIFY FILE DETAILS";
2. Add a column (e.g. name it "sort" or "index");
3. Use list view to put your preferred sorting order number in the new column;
4. "Uncheck" the box for display if you don't want them to show up;
5. Lastly, select that new column name for "Initial Sort"

I tried to figure out how to do this, the add a column advice, etc., to no avail.

I have the latest iteration of 9 Pro Extended.

It is frustrating that Portfolio alphbetizes the files no matter the order in which I add them.

The Help feature is useless on this problem.

Can anyone elucidate?

Thanks in advance.

Assuming the navigator style you're using supports it, a portfolio will display the files in the order you choose in the Edit portfolio / specify file details panel. By default, it sorts using the name unless there's a column called "index" with values in it.

"index" will be there, but starts off empty. Just double-click one of the boxes and start typing in numbers, a box at a time - "0", "1", etc - then make sure "index" is the field for sorting in the panel, and it will work as you want.

Thanks. I figured it out. Now, why the heck does not the Help feature have this tip?

Does anyone know if you can add a secondary sort? I want Acrobat to initially sort by the index column that I added, and then by modified date.

Sorry to burden you guys and gals again.

I have the same problem and cannot get my task done even after reading and reading the posts in this thread.

I created a portfolio with 15 PDF files. Sometime later I edited the 14th file, which changed its 'created' date, and which action put that file at the end of the list of 15 files due to its latest creation date. But I want that file to remain as number 14 in the list.

I created a column called "Index" and in the index column of the 15 files I inserted numbers 1 to 15, numbering the file I want to appear as the 14th file as "14."

OKAY, OKAY, OKAY, I figured out my mistake/omission. ATSANG's helpful post needs to add in Line 2 of his list, to select "Number" on the right where "Columns to Display"/Add a Column appears. In the add a column you key in the name of the column you desire. I wanted "Index." To the right I selected "Number" so I can label the 15 files 1 to 15. I did that then tested by editing the 14th file just slightly. After the edit that file remained number 14 even though its "creation date" changed to be the lastest creation date of the 15 files.

I am glad this discussion list is available and hope this post helps with any ambiguity and does not add ambiguity.

If I am wrong or my remarks needed correction or supplemention, please correct or supplement.

LAST, totally unrelated to this I was asked to attend the (to be historic) game 6 of the Rangers and Yankess at Arlington, Texas, on October 22, 2010. He would not even let me pay the $100.00 The experience was electric/festive/fantasic, etc., since I am from Texas and the Rangers won. My buddy was not so happy as he is a lifelong Yankees fan from NYC/New England/Connecticut. He kept telling me the game would not be historic if the Yankess won, only if he Rangers won. Well, that is history..... Fantasic opportunity and game.
