PDF Packages made in AP 8.1.7, thumbnails not showing up in Reader

I created a set of ebooks where the chapters are set up as individual PDFs in a Package done in Acrobat Pro 8.1.7 (Mac)

My client informs me that some customers are not seeing the thumbnails in Reader, and only see the first PDF, which is a single page cover sheet. This makes the book unreadable for them. Customers are advised to make sure their Reader is the most current, yet I'm told this is not solving the issue.

I discover tonight that Acrobat Pro 9 now calls these "Portfolios". I haven't upgraded to 9 yet, but I'm using 9.3 for the Reader. I see the thumbnails on the left of the Reader window in all three ebooks.

Is there a quirk where Reader 9 doesn't show the thumbnails for a Package created in Acrobat Pro 8? Or is there a setting where customers might have the left sidebar turned off? I see in Reader's View Menu there's a Portfolio with a submenu.

Any thoughts from others? I appreciate any ideas from you.

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 8.1.7, Macintosh

Is the problem seen with other similar files or is this file specific ? Could you share the file in any case.

It has happened an estimated 20% of the time, and with three different titles. We've run tests where I receive the product and opened it, as anyone would have it delivered. It comes as a .zip file.

But 20% failure is 80% success, so it must not be our files, one would think.

It's been platform independent, as far as we can tell, happening to users on Mac and Windows. The file comes as a .zip so it must be downloaded to a hard drive and opened using Reader or a browser viewer. I am aware that Mac users on Safari and Firefox can have some issues were only the first page can show up, and that's similar to what we're facing here.

That's the details I can give at the moment.

David....did you resolve this ...I have a Mac user who appears to be seeing the same thing...the first page and then she indicates that file appears to be split ?

No I haven't. It appears to be a quirk with some customers of the ebook. Others are not having the same problem. It may just be a fluke.

I am using acrobat and encrypted a PDF file created with what apparently is amynuni 400 ?(thru a software program I use). Normally PC users can open teh files. If I just send the MAC user the straight PDF created file...they can open it... But if I open teh file and encrypt it with a password using Acrobat 9....the user sees the first page but the rest is apparently split in another file that the user can't access. Thanks
