Portfolio is changing the links within my pdf files!

This is weird, and unhelpful. I currently have 10 folders, each folder contains an index pdf, that links to dozens of pdfs within the folder. If I open an index pdf, the links work fine, and open the required documents.

However, when I build a portfolio of the 10 index pdfs (which I store in the same folder as the 10 other folders), the links no longer work! Couple of points:

- The links are still present when I examine them using the link tool, but Portfolio has omitted the lowest level folder name from each link

- If I make a portfolio within a folder, that contains just one index pdf, the links work fine.

Is this a bug/feature/enhancement?

Packages and Portfolios create there own directory hierarchy within themselves, so any links between PDF in the Package or Portfolio need to be recreated within the Package Portfolio. Unfortunately this is just how it works.

Hi George,

I was aware of the restriction within Portfolios, which is why the referenced files are still outside the portfolio. This workaround seemed to work, until I moved from an experimental structure to the working documents. It was then that I noticed that adding a file to the Portfolio truncated part of the link's root to an external file. It looks and feels like a bug?

This does strike me as a pretty fundamental flaw with Portfolios. So far, I can't really see much advantage to them: they're less convenient than just using a folderful of disparate, cross-linked pdf files.

Right, I've worked out how to do this!

I've moved the 'index' framemaker files to the same folder as the portfolio, then updated cross-references, and saved the files as pdfs. That means the portfolio and all the index files are at the same level.

When you look at the link information, they were changed by Acrobat before, but this doesn't happen when they share the same folder. The pdf files that are linked from each of the index files DON'T have to be in the same folder, but they do need to be in folders that are 'down the tree' rather than up it...
