Portfolio Custom Layout

I recently installed Adobe X on Windows 7. After using Adobe 9 to create reference portfolios I received tremendous feedback from users who really liked the preview pane allowing all them to view the document and search its content without opening it in a separate window.

Now Adobe X seems to restrict the preview pane to a default size which doesn't allow the same features. Can I create a custom layout to modify the window size?

Yes you can, but you will have to create it from scratch using Flex and the Acrobat X Portfolio SDK. It's not trivial by any means, but it is possible.

Unsar points out that custom layouts can be made using Sdk but it's a mountain of work.

Why hadn't adobe released more custom layouts. They have left it for the development community to do so. But guess what? No one is.

I have been hunting for 1 year on this. It's driving me crazy. I have gone from loving adobe to hating them.

Have you looked at the PDF Portfolio Gallery on this site?
..
Maybe Adobe is leaving some work for the independent consultants in graphics design. Also many users still are using version 7 or below the users will be very disappointed with just seeing the upgrade screen.

The examples in the Portfolio Gallery on AUC are not available for use as templates, they are finished files (you cannot extract the navigator from a PDF). We did have a Portfolio Exchange but it's not currently online.
.
There are no announced plans for Adobe to issue any additional layouts or themes for Acrobat X; though the requests for more choice of content are noted George is correct - designing custom layouts is intended as something for the Flex community to do. I agree there isn't a lot of public-access material out there, but if a company wants a layout developing there are truckloads of Flex programmers out there who can do it, as the programming and design work involved is nothing compared to writing an app or a game.
.
With Acrobat X Portfolio "themes", the ability to skin a layout is far simpler than it was before, and needs no programming whatsoever - just a copy of Illustrator and Flash Pro. It's only the layouts (NAV files) which require coding.
