Portfolio takes forever to open

Hello,

I created a Portfolio that contains PDFs and two WMV files that is to be placed on a CD. The total size of the portfolio is around 140 Mb and I am using Acrobat 9.4.5.

When I burn the Portfolio to a CD and attempt to open it, the file takes forever to open or on some machines, will not open at all. I do not think this is due to the size of the file, since I have created Portfolios that are larger.

Does anyone have any suggestions for what I can do to help speed up the time it takes for the file to open?

Thank you for your help!

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 9.4.3, Windows

You can't speed it up. File size is not the issue. In order to create a thumbnail for each of the files, Acrobat needs to open each one in the background and create an image from the first page of each of the documents so portfolios with large numbers of files will take much longer and portfolios with multiple file types will take even longer than that.

I could have a gigabyte size portfolio with a single file in it and it will open pretty quickly and a 1 megabyte portfolio with 3 small word files, 3 small powerpoint files and 3 small excel files and it will be dog slow to open.

Because of the random access nature of PDF files in general and PDF portfolios in particular, opening a portfolio from a CD is going to be just awful. Can you use a USB key instead?

Thank you so much for your quick response to my problem!

Unfortunately, CDs are the way in which we distrubute the documents for certain product lines, so there really is no other format I can use. This explains why the larger portfolios with maybe not so many PDFs did not take as long to open, though.

Thank you again for your help!

I guess I have one more question if you don't mind. Is there a limit to how many files should be included in a Portfolio? We include a large amount of files, mostly PDFs, on our CDs, so I am wondering if maybe Portfolios are not the correct format for organizing these files.

Thank you!

There is no technical limit to the number of files in a Portfolio but there are practical limits that you'll need to determine for yourself based on your tolerance for speed, size, seachability etc.
