Reader 9 opens p'folio as basic thumbnail grid ... why?

Hi All

I'm using Acrobat 9 Pro to create PDF Portfolios.
- I create portfolios with multiple PDF files as attachments and with my own PDF cover sheet.
- If i or my users open my portfolio in Reader 7, v 7.0.8; the portfolio opens with the main area as my cover page and the lower pane as the attachment area.

This is good, as expected.

However, company have recently switched to installing Reader 9 and the above no longer works.
- If my users open my portfolio in Reader 9 v 9.2.0, it opens as a basic grid of thumbnails. (ie, no nice cover page, no nice attachments pane)

1. Has anyone experienced this?
2. Is this an Acrobat setting i am missing in my Acrobat portfolio creation process?
3. Is this a known Reader 9 problem?
4. Does anyone know how i can get Reader 9 to open my portfolio as Reader 7 does?

I would much appreciate any help.

Thanks

Matt

Hi ya Matt,

At first i was a bit confused by ya post but think i've got my head around it!

I think there might be a little confusion over Portfolios and a PDF package from acrobat 8. The coversheet you was talking about originated from the PDF package era!

If you are creating a PORTFOLIO in acrobat 9 then these can not be viewed as expected in acrobat 8 or less as these are not supported as they are brand new to 9. If you have created a portfolio in Acrobat 9, when you open them up in 8 or below they will open up looking like a PDF package.

You say you have migrated to acrobat 9 which is good and within Acrobat you have a lot more tool at your disposal to make a good presentation. What i thing you are doing is either creating a portfolio from the combine option or assemble option and what that does is create a default template, which is the grid of thumbnails. This is the first step to creating your portfolio, to modify the layout. choose Modify and choose edit Portfolio, in the Basic Layouts, choose Grid with file Preview (they are very similar to the PDF package, you can choose what ever you like tho :-) ), you can also change colors, welcome pages headers etc.

Hope this ok and what you are after?

Hi smitchell

I think you are right; thanks for working it out.

- I created a portfolio in Acro 9, no attention to layout.
- I liked the look of it in the default Reader our company shipped, i.e. Reader 7. Which sounds, as you say, that this is what is known as a PDF Package from some prevous era that i am not aware of.
--Just chance i guess that I preferred the look of the backward compatible default settings.
- Now we ship Reader 9 and I could not figure out why the portfolio looks bad.
- It looks bad because I have not formatted the layout for Reader 9, i.e., how it is supposed to look.

It has dawned on me that the portfolio as viewed in Reader 9 could in fact look worse than the those viewed in Reader 7. My work now is, as you say, to try and use the preset features of 9 to try and make this thing look presentable.

Many thanks

I hope this can help others too.

Regards

At the TAFE where I work, the teachers would like their students to create portfolios of their work. This is not a problem. However the teachers would like this to be a living file that when students get into employment they can add new projects created to their portfolio. Is this possible in Reader 9 or must they have Writer, (cost is the problem).

Many thanks

Hi mpont,
From the Acrobat 9 Product Comparison:

Quote:
Assemble a wide range of content types in a polished, organized PDF Portfolio
This can be done with release 9.x of Acrobat Standard, Professional, or Pro Extended.
While Adobe Reader 9 can "view", it cannot create/edit Portfolios.
Note that Portfolios are specific to the 9.x product releases.

For students, you may want to look over Adobe's Academic pricing.
It is noticeably less the msrp.
There may be volume discounts available via Academic purchase as well.

Matt,

I realize it's been a while since you posted your question, but I wanted to add to this thread for those who may read it later...

Make sure you update your Acrobat 9 Pro to the latest versions. There are PDF Portfolio layouts that became available after 9.0.0 launched that can mimic what is seen in Acrobat/Reader 7, with a large document preview and thumbnails or list along the side. Also try using the "Background Image" PDF Portfolio layout for something very presentable, with clickable file icons positioned wherever you wish on the background page and a chance to use the same or different images for each folder.

Best wishes.
