Booklet printing of letter-sized pages on tabloid (11x17) paper

This is turning out to be trickier than I thought it would be. I have a PDF containing standard letter-sized pages in the usual portrait orientation. I want to print two pages side by side on one 11x17 sheet (ie. a booklet) with page one on the left. In print setup->page layout, I've selected two pages per sheet. I also checked print preview so as not to waste a lot of paper.

When I print with these settings, my print preview shows both pages side by side on one sheet as requested, but the margins are huge and the page content is reduced in size. The other strange thing is that the little preview window in the print setup dialog never shows the booklet format, despite the fact that when I print, the print preview shows a booklet page.

This is with Acrobat Pro 9.0 running on Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. My printer is an Epson Workforce 1100.

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 9.3.1, Windows

You need a plug-in like Quite Imposing or callas pdfToolbox to impose the pages using "booklet" or "saddle stitch".

I never really was good at handling pdf files, that's one of the reasons I am here now. Booklet printing from pdf files can be very tricky actually if you are not prepared for it. I would have never guessed that in a situation like this all you need is a plug in.
