I was just recently upgraded to CS3 with Acrobat 8 in it. Since the upgrade, I can no longer export layout to pdf from Quark to Distiller and get a pdf. Below is the bottom of the log I received from Distiller with my errors. This worked perfectly with Distiller v7 (CS2). I started by loading my joboptions from v7 but although it still works in InDesign, it no longer works in Quark 6. THe thing of it is too... when I print to the Adobe PDF driver, and even though I my setting is Print Quality it compresses the file every time. I have an 18M Quark file and a 1.5M pdf (distiller compression is off). Somehting is wrong. Can you help me?

I'm Desperate

This does seem very odd since your Distiller log file mentions
1) the PDF not confirming to PDF/A due to file attachments and then
2) the error relating to PDF/X-4 (a new standard for live transparent and OCG PDFs) in the same error log?

These are two completely different standards on the same page as such?

I would remove Acrobat and then re-install and patch to 8.1.2 ... It might be also worth leaving the custom install of Distiller job options - just create a new one in Distiller 8 .. it's virtually the same as Distiller 7 (except for extended standards) ..

Hope this helps,

Jon

I've been using Acrobat since v1.0 and still get amazed by its power. An Acrobat ACE since 1999

Thank you gentlemen,
This information helped me a lot and realizing that Distiller is confused more than I am is a big relief.
The solution my IT department and I came up with was to uninstall both CS2 and CS3 since the upgrade to CS3 did not replace CS2 except for the Acrobat part of it. We then ran all the updates that popped up and when I attempted to export from Quark 6.0 again I had NEW error messages, but I played with the Distiller settings with success.
I still haven't figured out thow to interperate all of Distiller's error messages, but I did notice a few things after the re-install that I had to pay more attention to in order to export from Quark 6.0:
1 - My new error was as follows (I didn't have to worry about this before):
>>CalCMYKProfile: U.S. Sheetfed Coated v2
>>PDFXOutputIntentProfile: None
>>PDFXOutputIntentProfile and CalCMYKProfile must be the same for Convert All Colors to CMYK.
>>%%[ Error: undefined; OffendingCommand: setdistillerparams; ErrorInfo: PDFXOutputIntentProfile setdistillerparams ]%%2- I had to rebuild my cutomized .joboptions from scratch and paid more attention to the settings
3 - in the color settings for 4-color output, I converted all my color mgmt policies to cmyk
4 - Next I had to match my CMYK working spaces to the output intent profile in the standards that I created (ie. cmyk working space set to US Sheetfed Coated v2 had to match both places)
5 - I did some reading about the OPI comments, learned they might cause conflicts so I unchecked this box in the Advanced document sturcturing conventions

The steps above seemed to work and I was able to get a high-res pdf exported from Quark, although I have not sent it out to my printer to see if they have any problems. Nor have I tried RGB output either, as I can adjust RGB for color output directly on our in-house Xerox 2400 machine. I hope this helps. I have been a dedicated user of Quark for years, but I'm finding the migration to InDesign better and better each day, espcially for color management.

Can anyone tell me if there is a place to find out more about the Distiller errors? My IT department is not versed in the functions of Adobe's software and I am on my own when troubleshooting. Thanks again for all the help so far.

Thanks again,
Caralyn
