Thanks, Ted, re 16 bit color and Acrobat Reader, etc. So, since an image (converted to pdf from Photoshop) cannot be exported from Reader 8, I guess my question would be even though viewing in reader would probably? be at 8 bit color, if the pdf created from Photoshop is 16 bit, will it print at 16 bit from Reader? If it will not, there is no point in creating the larger pdf, right?

Well, if you print a 16-bit color file, it really only prints at 8-bit. No printer can take advantage of all the extra levels of gray that are contained in 16-bit images. A maximum of 256 levels of gray (8-bit images) is all you can expect from any printer.
