HI
i am a beginner and dont understand the purpose and use of the distiller.

I am also interested in knowing how to set margins on a pdf document and how do i know what the margins are?

I have converted a file from word to adobe and it came thru just fine but i need to confirm that the margins are according to the specs i have been instructed (which are given different from the word doc).

does a doc convert with same margins as word?

i know i am asking a lot of questions so please make a full sentence in your answer so i can know which question you are answering

You're great! :) thanks i appreciate any help!

As a graphic designer I use Distiller to get a file 'press ready' before I send it off to a printer. Through Distiller you can specify settings to create PDF documents that are well suited for quality printing since most printers now go direct-to-plate via a distilled file. Other than that, I'm sure the Adobe Web site can provide more capabilities and uses.

Regarding margins, when you create a PDF from Word or whatever program you're using, the PDF should take on the same (or similar) properties from the original document (unless you specify otherwise before converting). So whatever margins you set in Word should be the same on your PDF.

To confirm your margins in Acrobat Pro you can click on View/Rulers to display the width and height of your document. If you click on the vertical/horizontal ruler and drag a guideline on to your document you can see the margins. For instance, if you set 1" margins in Word the guidelines will line up with 1" on the rulers in Acrobat Pro.

Hope that helps! (I'm kind of an intermediate beginner, but learning more and more about this program.)
