Embedding fonts

I submitted this question elsewhere, but the note bounced back, so I'm trying again here:

Is there a way to lock down Distiller settings and/or Acrobat itself-- if that's the better place-- to fully embed fonts every single time? Sometimes no matter what, they end up as subsets.

I am working with book interiors and covers that are printed to postscript from Quark XPress (versions 6.x and 7.x) and InDesign CS3 files on a Mac G5 running Leopard. Distiller version 8.1.2 is used to create the PDFs. All images are linked and updated, and all fonts are activated in the native application before the postscript is generated. There are no menu-styled attributes such as bold or italic applied. None of the fonts are under restricted licenses that would prevent their inclusion in a PDF.

I've tried adding fonts to Always Embed under Edit Adobe PDF Settings and frequently purging system and application font caches, but this doesn't seem to help. Any suggestions? Seems like I must be missing something!

Many thanks,

Dana

Hi Dana,

I'm pretty sure there is no exact way to ensure each and every font does get embedded as a subset even if you select this option under Distiller.

My question would be 'why' would you specifically want this option? If you're keen to ensure the PDF will print correctly then yes - both with subset ON or subset OFF. The best way to check is using the preflight option under the ADVANCED menu and using a setting such as Convert to PDF/X-1a:2001 or another PDF/X setting if you have experience in this area.

Hope this helps?

Jon

I've been using Acrobat since v1.0 and still get amazed by its power. An Acrobat ACE since 1999
