We're looking for an imposition package that can perform many basic imposition layouts within Acrobat for a PDF workflow. Most of what I've seen seems very limited or a dead-end product if we want to do more in the future. Any suggestions?

I'd suggest looking at Quite Imposing or Quite Imposing Plus - they're now Acrobat 9 compatible.

(no connection other than I use them, and never found reason to throw things at the screen because of it)

I'd suggest looking at inpO2 from Dynagram.

It's a modular imposition solution for Acrobat 8/9 (mac and windows) that ranges from a powerful entry level product to a full blown imposition package with all the bells and whistles.

Also, there is a promotion going on right now for anyone who has used INposition for QuarkXpress in the past. You can get a free inpO2 Wizard just for attending one of the Special Offer Webinars to inpO2 for INposition customers. Link Below.

Enjoy!

If you are on a budget, you might look at PDF Snake

http://www.pdfsnake.com

And if you can program in Python (doesn't everybody?) you can create you one tools and such.
