Preflight for images that have been scaled

Acrobat 8 pro.

Assumptions:
1. PDF created from InDeisgn CS3 export
2. No image resampling at time of PDF creation

Is there a way to tell if... say... a 1x1 image at 200 ppi was scaled to ...say....6x6 in the InDesign Layout previous to PDF export?

I would venture that this level of info isn't retained, but thought I'd put it out there anyway.

What say you?

Yes,

Enfocus PitStop Pro will detect and report such a thing.

OK, Where in PitStop Pro do you see such info?

I'm using v7.52 and can't find a reporting tool on it. The inspector offers no such feedback on a selected object and the preflight profile options will report Page Scaling, but not object scaling. Under Image Position you can report on an image that has been scaled non-proportionally only, but that's it.

Please tell me where you see such reporting.

I'd like to have such reporting, but really just preflighting the resolution should filter out any bad images. When you scale an image...say in InDesign and export to PDF without resampling the images the effective resolution will change for the images. A 1x1 image at 300 ppi when scaled 600% to 6x6 will now have an effective resolution of 50 ppi.

Still having a report on any scaling with a percentage scale from original size would be nice.

Hi Rhickey,

It may be that you do not have your preflight profile set up properly to detect and then report this information.

While in Acrobat,

- under the Window menu

- select "Show PitStop PDF Profile Panel"

This should present a dialog box named "Enfocus PitStop PDF Profile Control Panel"

- click over the "Managing" tab

- click over Edit

this should present a dialog box named "Enfocus PDF Profile Editor"

on the left of this expanded dialog box, about 3/4 of the way down, find and click on the item named "Image Resolution"

Now, at the top, be sure that is enabled - that is, be sure there is a check inside the check box directly to the left of the words "Enable Image Resolution"

Enable all the items under "Problems to detect" - under the "Report As" select information (not Error!)

Now, since we are not interested in having PitStop creating an "Error" - and just capturing information and placing this into a PitStop report - be sure to enter the same amounts in both resolution above and below...

I have placed two screen captures into a Google Document that I have published for you in case I lost you here...

I also did a screen capture of the PitStop report showing what a scaled image report looks like (perhaps you are getting the report but not knowing what it means?)

Hope this help ! - feel free to call me on the phone at 805 527 8130 if something I typed here was not clear enough !

michaelejahn,

First of all, thank you for taking time to reply.

I have been doing exactly what you specified all along, but there is no reporting that notates an image has been scaled from its 100% original size.

Yes, I do see reporting on the resolution and I do use that info already, but I'm looking for precise reporting that notates that scaling has occurred on a given image and to what percentage it has been scaled.

Are we on the same page? I'm looking for scale reporting, not resolution.

Oh, BTW - I could not view your link from my work...it's blocked by our filters.

Thanks again
