I wish to print my front matter pages with miniscule roman numerals & the text with arabic numerals.

I can change the numeration style of the page buttons but so far I am defeated in my ability to prnt the prefix page numbers of my document ina different style; further I have been unable to force the nth page to start with 1.

My wish is that the first part of my document to print page #s as i, ii, iii...
and the second part of my document to print page #s as 1, 2, 3...

You would be better served by doing this in the authoring program that created the PDF.

I have used acrobat to combine dozens of word files into a single pdf, each file being on the order of a single page.

Are you suggesting that that which I hope to do is not to be done in acrobat?

Acrobat has a footer capabiltiy but not flexible enough for this. If want to use Acrobat Professional, you will have to add a uniqely named field and enter the value you want for the page number.
