Answered

If a user has an Acrobat 8 viewer or earlier and a Flash player will they be able to read Flash files contained in Acrobat 9?

If this works only in certain cases what are the limitations?

What happens if somebody tries to view Acrobat 9 with Flash in a non-Acrobat 9 viewer?

Thanks.

Hi Ira,

When you embed Flash into a PDF and open that file in a previous version of Acrobat, you will see a message alerting you that the file can't be played in the version (plus, there is a link to the newest version of Reader).

However, you may use the Movie tool instead of the Flash tool to embed the file. In that case, Acrobat and Reader previous to 9 can play object. The only caveat is that the movie will be played by an external player such as QuickTime—as it did with previous versions or Acrobat.

I am a long-time Acrobat user, an employee of Adobe Systems, and Maine native. I have created training videos for Total Training, consulted with people to help them better use Acrobat, and developed new business for Adobe as a Business Development Manager

tplumer, correction... Using the Movie Tool instead of the Flash Tool is not going to automatically make the Flash viewable in earlier versions of Acrobat, also you can get backward compatibility using the Flash Tool.

When you select either the "Insert Flash" or "Insert Video" tools there is a "button/link" in the dialog that says "Create Legacy Multimedia content", if you click that link you are redirected to a different dialog box (called "Add Movie" which is the Multimedia tool from Acrobat 8) which allows for backward compatability.

Keep in mind that the new Multimedia type created by default in Acrobat 9 is not dependent on any software (players/codecs) installed on the users system, all that they need is Reader 9 (free) to view the PDF's and the Flash. Using the Legacy route is dependent on the players installed on the system viewing the PDF.

The point about getting an error message with the link to download Reader 9 is correct, if you embed Flash and a user opens the PDF in Acrobat 8 (or earlier) they will be informed the content is too new and to download Reader 9.
