"There is no Acrobat X compatible media" - but how *do* I add it?

On Acrobat 9, Standard. Trying to create a pdf which plays sound files (mp3, wav... anything common) from a Word document or an html document.

I got as figuring that the Multimedia button is only there in Pro Extended (cheers...). Having spent the evening browsing the web, it would appear that it's possible to add sound manually though. As far as I understand, I have to create a link or a button, then create an action and tell it to play media on mouse on/off whatever.

But every time I try and tell it to play Media, I get a message telling me "There is no Acrobat X compatible media in this document, therefore the action cannot be created". What it does not tell me is, how to get the media file into the document.

I've tried creating pdfs from html files which link to a sound file but no luck.

Any help would be hugely appreciated!

My Product Information:
Acrobat Standard 9.1, Windows

Hi akerbeltz,

I don't think you can add a sound file with Acrobat Standard- what did you find/read that said you could?

Here is a matrix of features for the different flavors of Acrobat-

Hope this helps,

Dimitri,

Yes, I saw that chart. I think it suggests that sound is "more conveniently" supported by Pro Extended.

The thing is, if it was not supported by my version, why do I have the menu option of creating a button, adding an action, and then I'm shown various options of playing media... it wouldn't make sense to show me something (not greyed out by the way) as an option that doesn't exist as an option for my version. At the very least I'd be expecting a message saying "Not supported in this version".

You have access to adding Multimedia (SWF, FLV, MP3, and H.264 encoded video) in Acrobat Pro version 9, the additional Multimedia "feature" in Pro Extended is converting/transcoding video that is not H.264 into FLV (therefore supporting many more video formats. Both Pro and ProExt also have the "legacy" multimedia features supporting another set of audio/video files.

Hi akerbeltz,

I probably should not have posted to this since I do not use Acrobat Standard, only Pro. So I can't look at the menu items or other options in Standard. But I've been told that while you can add an "Action" to play a sound file (what you have tried) that is different from importing a sound file into a PDF. Adding a sound file to a PDF is done using the "Sound Tool" and I don't believe you will find that tool in Standard ( if it is there you should check out using it to add the sound file).

I know this doesn't help you out and it is confusing to have the "action" option available but not the ability to add a sound file the action can operate on. Adding form fields to PDFs with Acrobat Standard is new in version 9- you may have found something that should have been disabled but was missed.

Hope this helps,

Dimitri
