Certificate encryption

If I create a self-signed digital id, and then use it for certificate encryption, what happens in a few years when the certificate expires?

Is there a way to create a copy of the digital id with a new or different expiration date?

Thanks

This looks like an old post, but I have the same question and have done a fair amount of reading (Document Security Users Guide, googling, etc.), and just haven't seen a clear answer to mjmd's question. I am a home users of Acrobat 8 (got it with a Fujitsu ScanSnap) and was using password protection for my sensitive personal documents. I became concerned about the brute force ability of some of the "password recovery" programs out there, and it looks like a much more secure solution would be using self-signed digital IDs and certificate. I, too, want to know what happens in a few years when the certificates expire. I don't want to have to go back through all my documents and re-establish all the security policies.
