Disappearing graphics

I work with illustrated books scanned and converted to pdf files.

When I apply password security to prevent users from changing the document, the graphics disappear from view.

???

Applying password security would not affect this. Do you have the following preference turned on Edit > Preferences > Page Display "Show large pictures"?
