How secure are forms?

Anonymous
Answered

Hi all,

I have an order form that had credit/debit card details on, those numbers are set as password so they come out with asterix and i have set the form up to return the data via acrobat.com.

Can anyone tell me how secure they really are?

The help says the data is sent encrypted but how good and reliable is it? Any info or links would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance

Hi smitchell15,

It's a good question and I don't have any links beyond the Adobe info you have already read, but I can say that absolutely nothing is foolproof while still being usable. The best you can do is use preventive measures. Many people are perfectly happy to dial up a 800 number and tell the person on the other end all their credit card info in order to place an order for something. Most people happily hand over their cards at restaurants to servers and get it back a few minutes later with a receipt. Who knows if they have a card copy machine in the back room? Who knows if that operator on the other end of the line is honest? I believe the data encryption used is certainly as good if not better than how many people use their credit card information today for common purchases. There are measures in place to prevent rampant fraud but fraud happens all the time if you read/watch the news.

This topic always makes me think of a small thing I do when I travel- I put little luggage locks on my bags. Those locks are small and certainly anyone who really wanted to get into my bag could with some effort. But the average petty thief looking for an easy target will by-pass my bag for someone who has no lock at all. It is the same with e-docs. Use preventive measures that will keep most people honest, but understand that a determined criminal will figure out how to beat any system given time and effort.

I know this isn't a direct answer to your qeustion, but this gets asked all the time and wanted to offer my opinion.

Hope this helps,

Dimitri

Hi ya Dimitri,

Thats brilliant thanx, and thank you for replying to my question. I thought that was the case. At least i can rest assured that i have done my best to prevent fraud and i can have alot of confidence in the system, and it was a very good point what you said about and determined crook and that summed it all up.

Thank you again

All the best :-)
