Is there a way to prevent users from saving a PDF file, copying it, or printing a duplicate soft copy using PDF Writer, yet still be able to print a hard copy?

My Product Information:
Acrobat Standard 8, Windows

Hi --

Certainly. Use password security. You can specify whether or not to allow any changes, and also the level of print quality that can be produced.

Quite right.

The problem is how far you want to go to ensure control. Likely the only way to maintain absolute control over a file is to have it served from a secure server that tracks instances of the file being opened, expiry dates, and so on.

Depending on the circumstances, that may be overkill. Is it worth the time or effort to a reader of the file?

I often add password protection to a file that I am sharing online, and my philosophy is that if a reader is determined enough to spend the time to produce an editable copy, then they are indeed a capable Acrobat user, and there's little I can do to prevent that.

A security gap may exist here, insofar as an otherwise secure pdf with printing priviledges allowed may be printed to a "virtual" printer whose digital copy of the pdf may (or can easily) be modifieed to remove the original pdf's copy or modification protections.
