Since a PDF can be opened in Illustrator, is it possible to protect vector graphics that are embedded in a PDF created with 9 Standard? or even 9 Pro?

My Product Information:
Acrobat Standard 9.1.1, Macintosh

You can set permissions security on the PDF to deny editing, which would prevent it opening in Illustrator without a password, but that's only a trivial solution as removing permissions passwords from PDFs is a 10-second job for anyone with Web access - so the general answer is "no".

there is no simple way to do it properly.

According to most IT HelpDesk people, the most common reason for user error (regardless of Operating System) is ID 10T.
