Verifying signatures

In Acrobat, you can set signature verification preferences to verify digital signatures (Edit > Preferences, click Security, select "Verify signatures when the document is opened").

What exactly happens when a signature is verified? Is this different from signature validation?

I don't see any difference in a signed PDF when "Verify signatures when the document is opened" is selected or deselected.

Thanks,

Sarah

When an digital signature is validated (this can be done upon opening a document or manually) the signature's digital ID certificate status is determined and the document integrity (has it changed since being signed) is also determined.

You can find additional information on this subject in the following document Digital Signature User Guide for Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader version 8.x.
