Acrobat 9 Very Slow

We run XP Professional and recently upgraded from Acrobat 8 Pro to Acrobat 9 Pro. They loaded it along with the other programs from CS4 Design Premium EXCEPT for Flash. Immediately, we began having problems with 40-50% of the cpu being used by acrobat.exe. The program itself loads quickly, but trying to scroll or page thru pdfs is VERY slow. Also, we have a library of pdfs on an ftp. With 8, those pdfs would open in the browser and you could navigate very quickly, but now they open as separate pdfs and usually run very slowly. Even pdfs on my hard drive that I just created are slow.

I've tried launching acrobat with no plug-ins by holding shift, and that works great for pdfs I then open from File Open. But it doesn't help me with the pdfs I need to view from the ftp. We run dual monitors and need multiple pdfs open at the same time on both monitors.

I have 3.25 GB of RAM with Core 2 Duo E6750 @ 2.66GHz. My IE addins that are loaded are Adobe PDF, Adobe PDF Conversion Toolbar Helper and Adobe PDF Link Helper.

Could installing only part of the CS4 Design Premium cause this problem?

Try clearing your browser cache:

Click Control Panel > Network & Internet > Delete browser history and cookies and delete only the temporary Internet files and History.Next run Disk Cleanup via the Accessories > System Tools > Disk Clean UpWhen finished, run Disk Defragmenter

Make sure all updates are installed for Windows and all Acrobat application.

Thanks for your help. I did what you suggested, but I'm still having the same issues.

I'm thinking from previous threads that I'm missing some .dll files. We're going to try to locate and load those today to see if it helps.

In your list of installed IE add-ons from Adobe System Incorporation, have you enabled Shockwave Flash Object, Adobe PDF Reader Link Helper, and SmartSelect Class ?

Funny you should ask...we just added adobepdf.dll to my add-ins and it fixed my opening outside the browser problem! So now my pdfs on the ftp are opening in the browser and I can scroll through them very quickly. That half of the problem is fixed.

However, pdfs I open on my hard drive are still eating up half of my cpu - even if I only have one open.

As for the other add-ons you asked about, I do have Shockwave Flash Object and SmartSelect Class enabled. I also have Adobe PDF Link Helper enabled, but don't see Adobe PDF Reader Link Helper.

I found a service running that seemed to be causing the problem. That service is Trusted Drive Manager by Wave Systems Corp. and the filename is tdmservice.exe. After disabling that service, and then uninstalling the software (it came preinstalled from Dell), the problem was resolved.

Thanks so much for the input dcraig. I searched my hard drive for tdmservice.exe, but nothing came up.

I'm still trying to find a solution. We uninstalled 9 from CS4 and reinstalled a stand-alone version, but we still have the really slow scrolling when you have two or more pdfs open.

Are you using a new Dell with Dell Control Point Security Manager" pre-installed on it? If so then try uninstalling that software from the Control Panel and see what happens.

Unistalling this software also GREATLY sped-up Excel while manipulating large spreadsheets.

I resolved this issue by replacing my video adapter. My old adapter was of mid quality containing only 256MB of onboard RAM. I just replaced it with a higher quality adapter containing 1GB of onboard RAM and the problem has completely disappeared.

Interesting. I'm running dual monitors with an ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro board that has 256 MB.

We've been using our dual monitors in vertical mode. I just discovered today that if I have Acrobat 9 Pro open on one of them in LANDSCAPE mode, I have no issues with slow navigation.

Short of getting a better graphics card as DCraig recommends above, does anyone know of a setting in Acrobat that might apply to a landscape vs. vertical monitor control?
