I upgraded from Adobe Reader 6.0 to Reader 8.1.2 and the Desktop ICON showing PDF... now defaults to a Windows ICON for .pdf files.

I am on Windows 2000, SP4... everything works fine but the proper ICON on screen. How can I get the PDF ICON to appear???

My Product Information:
Reader 8.1.2, Windows

Try resetting the file association.

Open a folder in Windows Explorer select Tools -->Folder Options.
Click on the File Types tab.
Scroll to see .PDF.
Click on .PDF then select Adobe Reader from the list.
OK, Apply, OK.
Done.

I have this problem too. I tried the steps above to reset the file association, but that didn't restore the PDF icon for my PDF files. I just get a generic file icon for all of my PDF files. (I miss them!) I'm on XP Professional and use Acrobat 6 Professional as well as Reader 8.

Installing Adobe Reader 8.0 on a computer that contains an installation of previous Acrobat versions, it is not a recommended configuration even though it is possible. Here is a link to Acrobat product interoperability and coexisting installations:

I finally was able to get the PDF icons to show for PDF files. I recently installed Acrobat 8 Professional and still had the icon problem. So I uninstalled Acrobat Reader 8 and the icons were visible! I reinstalled Acrobat Reader 8 and the icons are STILL visible! Thank goodness because it was driving me crazy.

I am using the horrible Vista and do not have the PDF icon on PDF docs on my Desktop. How can I replace the hideous MSFT icon with the PDF one?

I too am using the horrible Vista. Some .pdf files show up in explorer with just the Adobe Icon, and a few show the first page of that particular file. Please, help... I want them all to show the first page of the document. Thanks!! Would someone please email me for info on how to change whatever settings need changing? Thanks!

Have you tried doing a Repair of your Acrobat installation from under the Help menu?
