Uninstal of 7 Pro fails, cannot install 9

Using Windows XP Pro SP3 with all updates…

In Add/Remove Programs, when you click the remove button for Adobe acrobat 7.1.0 Professional (upgrade, which has always worked fine), it immediately gives you the following message:
"The installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you cannot access it."
I tried to unistall it again with the original 7 dvd in the dvd drive, but got the same error.

I inserted the original DVD, hoping that it would give me add/remove/repair options, but it gave me exactly the same error message as above.

With the manual uninstall failing, I then tried to install Adobe Acrobat 9 pro Extended (upgrade) and it fails to uninstall 7.1.0 with the following error message:
"Error 1714. The older version of Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro Extended - English,Francais, Deutsch cannot be removed. Contact you technical support group."

I am dead in the water. Please advise.

Acrobat uses registry keys to store the installation path information. If the registry keys become damaged, the Error 1714 can be generated. Here is a technical note to address the problem.

That link just gives me a blank page.

I am having the same problem, I have unintalled everything to do with acrobat including the reader and have edited anything to do with acrobat out of my registry. I have cleaned my registry numerous times and I keep getting this error message. I am at a loss on what to try next and was hoping that this link would provide the solution.

Thanks for any help

Have you tried running the Microsoft Windows Installer CleanUp Utility prior to installing Acrobat 9? You can go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 on the Microsoft Support website for instructions on downloading and installing this utility.

The link to registry keys is broken again. Is there a more permanent link you might be able to provide?

Was your Acrobat installation part of Creative Suite? If so, which version?

I had the same problem, and also found a broken link when I clicked the Technical Note link above.

I took the advise of running the Microsoft Windows Installer CleanUp Utility prior to installing Acrobat 9. This worked in that I was able to install Acrobat 9 EXT, but now I have both 8 Pro and 9 Ext installed.

What do I do about the 8 Pro Installation?
