Does locking a field interfere with custom calculations attached to the locked field?
 
Other than preventing movement of a field and changing its properties, is there any additional consequence to locking a field, or is locking a field discouraged or encouraged?

No, it just prevents changes to the field via the user interface. I don't think it's either encouraged or discouraged, just do whatever is helpful for you.
