I have created a fillable form and posted it to my website. The form can be successfully filled out and submitted to my email, but when I try to open the submitted form I get the following error message: "This does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the folder options control panel" I have attempted to do this and there is no option for me to choose. I have also installed the newest version of Adobe Reader. I am stumpted...can you help?

My Product Information:

If the attachement in your email has either a PDF, XDP, or FDF extension then there is something wrong with you file associations. If the attachment does not have one of these extensions then there is a problem.

Since Adobe Reader was the last Acrobat program that was installed then it should have set the file associations. One way to tell is the icon thats used for the file in the file explorer.

But try this. Start Reader first, and then try opening the attachement. Also try saving the attachment to your hard drive and opening it from there.

Thank you Thom,
I tried both of your suggestions to no avail. When I tried to open my file in Adobe Reader I got the following: "A. Reader could not open 'my file.XML' because it is either not a supported file type or because file had been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded.)" The file was sent as an email attachment. I have tried to get my system to open XML formats (downloaded a file from microsoft.com, open under the file options panel...) but nothing as worked. I bought Acrobat 8 because it could make my work easier with the forms it could create. This is frustrating me mightily!
One more thought - When I open an Xcel file I get the following: "compile error in hidden module:DistMon" with and Okay button. Once I click okay I get a blank Xcel window until I minimize and reopen. Then I get my Xcel file back. When I close the file I get the same message and when I click okay it closes and saves the file just fine. Xcel did not do this until I loaded Acrobat 8. Could these have anything to do with one another since an XML format is a data file (right?)? I have Office 2007. Any more ideas?

I have a similar problem. Someone filled in the dynamic form and e-mailed it back to us, but we cannot open it because it says "Acrobat could not open 'file.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded). To create an Adobe PDF document, go to the source application, then print the document to Adobe PDF."

Any ideas on why this happened/how to correct it? Thanks!

I think the pdf attachments are damaged or something. If possible, you can ask the senders to send you again. Or you can try a utility called Advanced PDF Repair to repair your PDF file. It works rather well for my corrupt PDF files. Its web address is http://www.datanumen.com/apdfr/ Hope this helps.

Hello ,

I have many old files which I have kept for my reference created by Acrobat 6 or 7, many of then I got from internet and are very useful to me. I keep a backup of them on other disc for fail safe.

Because of recent crash I had to reinstall windows XP on my machine. But when I try to open those old pdf file with my Acrobat 9.3 it does not work. it comes up with a message

"Acrobat reader could not open the file 'MyBook.pdf' because it is either not a supported file or because the file has been damaged"

Please can any of you help me as these files are really important to me and I have tried some PDF repair software as well, without any luck.

Thanks in advance,
Jack

I have to join the chorus of people with the following error too:

"Acrobat could not open 'filename.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)."

The file is an IRS form file off the Scottrade.com website. All I did was fill in some blanks and Save As a new pdf. It opens fine on my Windows 7 Home Premium x62 laptop with Acrobat Standard 8.2.2, but when I transfer it to a flash thumb drive or to a my Windows Vista Home Premium x62 laptop with Acrobat Standard 8.2.2, I get the error.

Totally bizarre! Are there some type of converters for Acrobat 9 form pdf docs that need to be added to v8.x to open them?

How are we suppose to pass Acrobat docs by email or flash drives to avoid such corruptions?

Can Acrobat Standard 8.x and Acrobat Reader 9.x run on the same computer?
