Secure Form on Return - Update

I have Acrobat Professional 8, and I would like to send a form to a group of people and have them fill it out and submit the data back to me. As the data may contain sensitive information, I would like to have the data encrypted. There is a check box that is grayed out that says "Secure Forms on Return". The Adobe tip says that I need a Digital ID, and it gives me a button to "Get Digital ID from Adobe Partner". When I follow that link, it takes me to a complicated maze of PDF security providers, all focused around digitally signing a document to confirm to an end user that it was created by me (not encrypting PDF form data). I have set up a Self-Signed Digital ID, and the box is still grayed out. As the GeoTrust certificate that the tip points me to is $595, and I am not certain that it would accomplish what I need, I would appreciate insight from anyone who has encountered this. Thanks.
UPDATE: I purchased a Digital ID from Verisign, and it shows up in my Digital ID section, but the Secure Forms on Return box is still grayed out.

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 8, Windows

Hi dewinit,

The Secure Form function certifies the form-originator’s identity to form recipients and encrypts the data that the recipients submit when returning a filled-in form.

If you're just looking to encrypt a PDF form I would suggest using the security options available in Acrobat. The security options allow you to encrypt all the document contents, all content except metadata (for search engines), or encrypt only file attachments.

For further information there is a "How to" on this under the Help menu.

Thanks,
Lori

I would like to use the Secure Form function as identified in the first part of your response. I am not looking to encrypt the form, I want the responses from recipients to be encrypted when they return a filled-in form. As the "secure forms on return" option is grayed out, I need some additional guidance. The "How-to" under the Help menu is woefully inadequate in addressing this function, and I find it hard to believe that more people are not frustrated by this issue.

Hi dewinit,

There are 3 requirements necessary to send secure forms: the file must be an XMA form (saved in LiveCycle Designer), the file must contain a submit button (with return email address such as mailto: adobe [dot] com]acrobat [at] adobe [dot] com, and the form originator must have a digital ID). You can create a self-signed Digital ID for use with Acrobat under Advanced --> Security Setting in Acrobat 8 Pro.Let us know if you need further details,
Lori

Additional update -- You'll need a Certified Document Service (public ID) to make the Secure form function operate. For more information visit:

Hi Lori,

According to his post, this gentlemen did do everything you suggested above (in your Oct. 31 post); Which is all available in the acrobat help files.

There's one more thing that he needs to do, according to Adobe support; I haven't tested this yet, but, when I do, I'll let you know if it worked:

UPDATE:
Adobe says that you have to get a "GeoTrust" brand digital certificate to use the "Secure forms on return" feature. It's $19.95 per year. You can read about it here, although this documentation doesn't say anything
about returned information; they (GeoTrust) tell me that it will be secure both ways.

http://www.geotrust.com/products/client … ential.asp "my credential"

The "GeoTrust" certificate is the only one that will light up the "Secure forms on return" checkbox. It has some special javascript embeded, which does this.

They have a 7-day return policy, if it doesn't work right.

I assume this is how I would develop an order form that I would post on my web site. It would be completed by the customer and emailed encrypted to me. Is that correct?

Also, if I wanted to send a copy to my Assistant's computer as well, would she be able to read the information?

Has anyone ever gotten this to work? I downloaded a trial Digital ID from VeriSign after their tech support assured me this was the product I needed - it didn't work.

I purchased a "My Credential" certificate from GeoTrust for $19.95 as noted on this thread. GeoTrust tech support also told me this would work - it didn't work.

The only option left is a $595 product, but I'm reluctant to shell out the money if it too does not work. I'd like to know if there are any actual users that have been successful in securing forms on return and what exact product they bought and what the cost was.

Thanks.

VeriSign (formerly GeoTrust) True Credentials for Adobe Acrobat allow authors to create Adobe PDF documents that clearly certify to the recipient that the author's identity has been verified by a trusted organization and that the document has not been altered.
For more information on True Credentials check out the Verisign website at:

I still don't think the question has been answered. I also am trying to find out more information about this "Secure forms on return" option and how it works. How is it secured? What kind of security? What all is exactly needed to do this - as everyone seems to be vague on the process? I am still waiting to hear back on my request from VeriSign, but from what others say, they don't really understand either.

More information would be helpful for everyone.

Thanks!

VeriSign does not seem to really understand this either.

It would be nice if someone from Adobe could clear this up.

In order to use the "Secure Forms on Return" feature in Acrobat 8, you'll need to use a Certified Document Service. One example of this is the True Credentials for Acrobat from VeriSign as mentioned in my post above. There is a lot of confusion because the names are very similar; however, True Credentials for Acrobat is different than "My Credentials". So make sure you have the "for Acrobat" version.

Well - this would be a nice feature for a problem I am trying to solve, but the VeriSign people do not even know what Adobe Acrobat "Secure Forms on Return" is - and I keep asking them about this feature and that I am only interested in this feature. I even told them that Adobe said I need True Credentials for Acrobat from VeriSign, and they still don't get it. They just want me to spend a bunch of money on something that they don't know about, and can not tell me how, or guarantee that it works.

I am really over this - It would be nice if Adobe and VeriSign would get on the same page. There isn't even anything on the VeriSign site about the "Secure Forms on Return" feature on True Credentials for Acrobat page.

Did this go away with the release of Adobe Pro 9? Has it been replaced with something? Why is it so difficult to get detailed information on this feature?

Unfortunately, it's $895.

Inail:

That is from the GeoTrust Website - GeoTrust is now owned by VeriSign, so I am sure the price is more, although they have yet to send me pricing information, or answer specific questions.

Again those pages (on GeoTurst or VeriSign websites) say nothing about "Secure Forms on Return"!

I purchased the MyCredentials for Adobe for $595 and the "secure forms on return" checkbox was enabled. It works great! The filled in forms can't be opened by anyone but the form creator.

Unfortunately I just upgraded from Acrobat Pro v8 to Acrobat Pro v9 and the "secure forms" functionality has been removed from the product. I contacted Adobe support and was told that "Acrobat 9 will only allow for the distribution of a form through Acrobat.com, an internal server, or through an email client." So not only am I out of luck, but I'm out $595 as well. The helpful tech support did say that I submit a feature request for future releases!

I'm extremely frustrated with Adobe. I FINALLY found a solution to my problem only to have them snatch it away.

A reply was posted to this question 3 years ago, is the answer still the same today? I also need this function.
