Change checkbox appearance to have a tick instead of a cross

As you can see I've been busy today...

Is there a way to change a checkbox appearance so a 'tick' is displayed, instead of a 'x'?

Sure, select the checkbox, go to the object tab and then the field tab.
There you can change the appearance style in many ways (dot, star, cross...)
