combining static pdf and livecycle dynamic form.

Hi everyone,

I created a pdf document from Indesign so it's a static file with no interactivity. I've also created a form in Livecycle Designer that's totally dynamic and an xml based form. I need to put the dynmic form at the back of the static pdf but when I try to insert it, the form comes in completely blank.

I just wondered is there a way around this or is there something I'm not doing or should be doing?

Appreciate any help.

My Product Information:
LiveCycle Designer, Macintosh

You cannot merge/combine XFA forms (dynamic) and static PDF's into one file.
It's because of the totally different structure of those PDF files.
Only thing you can to is to attach one file to another or create a PDF Portfolio.

Thanks for the reply,

I've just researched pdf portfolios and it seems as though this may work. Just one thing though: is it possible to create cross-document links between the static pdf and the Livecycle pdf even while they're in the portfolio? And is it possible to use destination links between the two files?

Hmmm...I don't know if this can be done with XFA forms, but with static ones it shouldn't be a problem.

Check out this tutorial.

Hi,

I tested the Link Tool in a Portfolio.
You can create links across different PDF files in a PDF Portfolio, but you only can create the links within the static PDF's as the Link Tool is grayed out on XFA forms.

Thanks for testing – I really did need the linking to be between the XFA form and the static but this may not be an option as you suggest.

Just one last thing if that's ok: If I email the portfolio to someone and then they can look at the two pdfs within it, are they able to attached another file to the portfolio and then email me back?

Yes, but only with Acrobat.
Reader doesn't have this feature.

See the 2 part series Shared Data in Packages Part 1 and Shared Data in Packages Part 2 by John Brinkman at his Form Feed blog. There is a fair amount of code involved, but most of the code is a cut and paste action for each individual PDF.

Links are very dependent upon where the PDFs are located, so if one moves a PDF from one location to another the links can easily be corrupted by moving from the original location. Portfolios are are a very special type of PDF and more sensitive to changes involving links.
