First letter of dropdown selections - inconsistent outcome

I have dropdown lists that are set up to NOT accept custom text entry. In theory, as soon as the user types the first letter in the dropdown, the first instance beginning with that letter will be provided.

eg. in a State field (in Australia) - if I type 'N', NSW will be displayed, or 'Q' - QLD will be provided. However, it's not consistent. I found that if I type 'A' it beeps at me and won't display the 'ACT'. (There will be Aussies out there, who'll probably think of funny reasons why). Trouble is, the same thing happens in other cases such as 'V' for VIC'.

I've had the same problem with other dropdowns, another example is with a Title field eg. Dr, Prof, Mr, Mrs, Ms, etc. Again, if I type a 'D' or 'P' or even 'M', I'll get Dr, Prof or the first instance of M which will be Miss - but if I type 'A' my Assoc Prof won't happen.

Can anyone explain this inconsistency and how I can get around it please?

Further to my last issue, I've discovered that this only happens with the first item on the list. The only reason I was having problems with others is because I entered them incorrectly.

So the problem still exists, but basically whatever is first on my dropdown list will not respond to the entry of its first letter in the field - while the rest will.
