Is there a process to update JS or is it done through LC Designer or another app updater?

I'm not sure what exactly is your question?!
LiveCycle Designer/Adobe Acrobat use own versions of JavaScript (ECMA-Script 262) and are build-in in the applications.
They are different to the JavaScript you use for Browsers or other applications.
You can't update them. Updates will be included new versions of Designer/Acrobat, if Adobe considers this as neccessary.
