Excel is not a database but it can be hooked into an LC form through ODBC, with some limitations. You can read more about it here: Excel and Acrobat

If you are using a 64bit OS you may have issues. Look at this search: Win 7 64 bit and ODBC

Thank you for the reply, how about microsoft access. What is the best way to connect a Acrobat PDF form to a Microsoft Access
database (mdb) file (which will reside in same directory, not on a server)?
I suppose I could convert the mdb file to XML and link that way, but it
would be nice to connect directly. Any other suggestions in general for
connecting Acrobat PDF forms to a database (that don't involve a server or
Web service)? and if you guide me with some detail instructions. Thanks

Are you talking about an Acrobat form or a LiveCycle form?
If the former, then it can only be connected to a DB if you're not using Acrobat X.

And Access DB can be connected directly into a LC form through the regular "DataConnection" functionality on the DataView window.
