Livecycle Designer Customization

Hi,

I am new to Livecycle Designer and wondering how or if I can customize it for my particular business problem, which at a high level is something like this:
1. User launches Livecycle Designer from an Administrative Console application
2. Livecycle Designer launches with the Data View automatically populated with components corresponding to entries in my database
3. User edits form
4. User saves form --> Custom validation is performed on the form's content and form is saved only to a specific location.

Is it possible to customize Designer for such an approach and if so, where do I need to start looking? For example, for section 4 would it be possible to add a new menu item to the menu bar etc.
Does the ES API provide functionality that can interact with the Designer application itself?

I understand that it may not be possible to extend the application's own functionality but is it possible to configure it to have the populated Data View on launch or to perform validation on the save etc?
