Loading values into a comb field from a range of other fields

I might be asking a bit much here, but I have a numeric field set up with a comb of 4.

I have 4 dropdowns. Each generates one of the 4 digits.

So the user selects dropdown 1 & that value belongs in the first box of the comb field.
Dropdown 2, the second box, and so forth. Those of you in Australia may be understand what I mean when I say that I'm generating a selected ANZSIC Code. Those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, it's a government industry code.

Is there a way I can script this or do I need to simply set up 4 separate fields, or even perhaps a table, to receive each of the values & make them look like a single combed field?

The simplest way is to do that is the flowting field feature, I think.
There for you don't need any script.

Your merging the results of different fields in a single text.
That's simply done.
Just click in your text on that point, you like to insert a valureof another field.
Then click right to open the contextmenu and select "floating field".
A hidden field is generated. Rename it to that way the source has and set it binding to "global".

I made an example for you:
