Saving a Form in LiveCycle Designer

I have a PDF form open in LiveCycle Designer. I adjusted the size of a field and clicked on Save and I get this message

Generating PDF Document...
Unable to open or create file C:\Users\Default1\Documents\@Songaia\Biogaians\& Volunteers\Volunteer Application_a.pdf
Permission denied

1 warnings/errors reported.

What does it mean unable to open or create, I already have it open?

Seems like you're saving it to a folder that has permission problems. Try saving it elsewhere like your desktop or another folder and see what happens.

I checked the folder properties and there isn't anything special about it. What is so confusing is I was making changes to this file and saving it periodically without any error. Then suddenly it gives this error. What's even more confusing is that I am able to do a Save As and change the name and it saves successfully. I can then make a few changes and save it successfuly but eventually it complains with this message and I am forced to do a Save As with a new name.

So I have absolutely no idea what is going on with this and it is quite maddening. If it really was a permissions problem with the folder then wouldn't the Save As attempts fail also? They always work, but I now have about 6 versions of the file in the folder.

So now, with a completely new form, I am getting this save problem again. I created the form using the Wizard and used a Word document as the input to the wizard. Then I opened the pdf file with LCD and starting making changes. I made many changes, (maybe 40 or so) and about every 5th change or so I did a save. All of those saves worked successfully.

Then, seemingly without warning this error message comes up again when I tried to save it again. So I figured that the most recent changes I had made were the culprint. So I quit without saving thus reverting to the last save before any offending changes were made. I opened it again in LCD and made a very small change, (i.e. changed two fields from numeric to text) and saved again and voila the error is back.

So when I look at the log I see this

Generating PDF Document...
Unable to open or create file C:\Users\Default1\Documents\Health\History, Douglas\Homeopathy\Medical History Questionaire-01.pdf
Permission denied

1 warnings/errors reported.

This is the closest thing to a meaningless message I have ever seen. No explanation of why there is a problem other than permission denied.

Can anybody help me with this?

So I think I have found something that may have a bearing on this, if not the direct cause. For antivirus protection I use Trend Micro Internet Pro. There are two facts around Trend Micro and this PDF file I have been having trouble saving.

1) A Trend Micro virus scan may have been in progress at some point when I had my PDF file open in LCD. I can't say for sure, since Trend Micro runs in the background and I often don't know when its running. But I think it likely.

2) If I right-click on the PDF file and choose properties, I see the usual stuff but I also now have a Scan Results Tab. When I click on that Tab it shows Trend Micro scan Results and lists the file name and this message
"The file does not exist or you do not have permission to open it" The tab has 3 buttons, Okay, Cancel and Apply though I am not sure what the Apply button is for since neither the file name nor the message in the list box under it is clickable. The Apply button is also grayed out.

3) The Security Tab shows that I have full authority for this file.

So during the time I was writing this post, the file will now save successfully and the Scan Results tab now says "No Incidents detected". So I am guessing it was merely an collision with Trend Micro. The Apply button is still grayed out on the Scan Results tab so I have no idea what that's for.

I think I have it now, so thanks to anyone who gave me time on this.

I don't know if this will help, but I frequently see this when working on a fillable form and I try to save it while I have the same form open (for testing) in Acrobat or a browser (Acrobat plugin) other than the Livecycle preview tab. Note that when this tab is open, the save button is greyed out

Since it is a fillable form, Windows opens it for exclusive read/write access for Acrobat, which causes LiveCycle to produce the error message described. LiveCycle can't be more explicit in the message since the block is being created by the Operating System, and not by LiveCycle itself.

The fact that your anti-virus can't open it either (The file does not exist or you do not have permission to open it) suggests that the file is being held open by another application, and not the anti-virus. Be aware that windows explorer is simply a re-skinned internet explorer (not exactly true I know, but the simplest way of explaining it) and so if the file is highlighted then explorer will try to generate a "preview" of the file which may also lock out any other access to that file.

I hope that helps someone :)
