Text wrapping with text tool

This is so basic I can't believe I'm having trouble doing it.

How do you get text to wrap?

I've tried dragging out a text box and I get the alert warning that "Resizing a text object by dragging its borders turns off the object's Expand to Fit option" which is what I hope will happen but as soon as I start entering text the text box expands ....... almost ... always. But somehow elsewhere in the document sometimes I have managed to do it, so I find myself copying those blocks of text and using them as the template for new text.

Sounds crazy. What am I doing wrong?

You can't wrap a Text box but you can wrap a Text field by setting it's properties through the Field tab to Allow Multiple Lines and set the maximum number of characters.

This is the thing.

I can get text in a text box to wrap.

I just don't know how I do it. It works intermittently.
