Open the Preferences dialog box (Ctrl(Win) or Command(Mac) + K). Click Documents and set the Documents in recently used list to 1. Click OK and reopen the Preferences. Change the setting to 9. That clears out the history and your old file should be deleted if not opened last.
You can also open files until the dead file falls off the list.
