1. We are speaking of Acrobat Distiller, correct ? I mean, it is not like you open a color PDF in Acrobat, make some edit, then when you save that PDF - and it changes to B&W, right ?2. What Distiller settings do you have selected ?

I no longer know WHAT I'm talking about. If I take my usual Word document, which has a coloured jpeg logo on it and hit the "save as pdf" button, it saves it in B&W. My company estimates have bright blue and red and THEY are being converted to B&W. I didn't think I'd changed ANY settings. All I did was replace a perfectly working Acrobat 6. with the new Acrobat 8. and I know absolutley nothing else. Byt he way, thanks for your quick response!
