Acrobat hangs in file menu

I use Acrobat 8.1 and each time I click on the "file" menu and move my cursor down to a menu item, it stops at the "organizer" item and the application hangs. I use windows XP. Any help is appreciated!

Try this.

Check for virus or malware.

Make sure you have the latest Acrobat updates.

From the Help button on the menu bar, click Repair Acrobat Installation.

thank you for your suggestions. Virus/spyware seems not to be an issue and I do have the latest updates. I reinstalled the entire program, deleted potential conflict sources (Scansoft PDF converter, Adobe Reader) but the same problem remains. It is very odd that the error only occurs when I move the mouse cursor into the "file" menu and try to go pass "organizer". All other menu items seem fine in this respect.

If you have other ideas please let me know (or anyone else on this forum).
