Acrobat problem opening pdf files

Acrobat 9 Pro, Mac, Snow leopard. New problem encountered. When I try to open a pdf file within Entourage or double click on a pdf file in finder view I get this error message:

The document “filename.pdf” could not be opened. Acrobat cannot open files in the “Adobe PDF document” format.

However, when I open Acrobat and then select the open file option, the files open without any problem. This is really irritating, nearly as irritating as the Photoshop CS4 problems with communicating with a scanner.

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 9.2, Macintosh

Nothing wrong with your Acrobat and PDF files. It maybe just becasue the default application to open the .pdf file is not Acrobat, maybe some other appplication that could not open PDF files,so double click would fail to open it. Reset it and it would be OK.

I will try my best to help you in PDF converison fields, objectively and Neutral.

I'm having this same problem. The files will open by doing a right click and "open with Adobe Reader", or by using the File>Open pull downs in Acrobat, but loaded on the web and accessed that way, in most any browser tells me that "The Adobe Acrobat and Reader Plug-In failed to load successfully".Incredibly frustrating when you want people to be able to access the pdf file online without having to jump through hoops.

Same as above. Acrobat Pro 9.2, Mac Snow Leopard, message "Acrobat cannot open files in the “Adobe PDF document” format." Documents open only from the Adobe Acrobat menu or from Acrobat Reader using Windows VM. No idea how to reset the files to default to opening with Acrobat as suggested by TonyPotter...

When I receive emails with a pdf file attached, I double-click the file and it opens in Notebook as garbage instead of in Acrobat. The only way I can open the file is to copy/paste the file onto my desktop (or elsewhere), open Acrobat, then "file open" from Acrobat to open the file (even if I double-click the file on my desktop after copy/paste it, it will open in Notebook instead of Acrobat).

WAY frustrating and time consuming!

I used to be able to merely double-click the attachment in the email and the file opens and launches acrobat...that was with a really old version of Arobat. I now have 8.1 Professional and having this problem.

What can I do to make it work?

Hi kathykrueger,

It sounds like the file association has been changed and your system thinks it should open all PDFs with Notebook. You don't say what platform you work on and I'm not familiar with Notebook, but if it is Windows open a File Explorer, find a PDF, Right Click, choose Open With, select the Choose Default Program, and then selct Acrobat.
If you are on a Mac you'll have to look up how to change file associations.

Hope this helps,

Dimitri

I have windows ... can't recall if vista or xp (not sure how to decifer). "File Explorer" - do you mean "Windows explorer?" I do not know what "file explorer" is. I went to "windows explorere," found a site with a pdf and did the right-click option...no such "open with" availalbe (same on email attachments or pdf files on desktop). So, not sure how to get to "open with" and if I am in the right place (windows explorer vs. "file explorer). Please assist. Thanks!

Wait! I figured out what you meant by "windows explorer." I tried what you said and whoa-la, it now works. THANK YOU so much! Wonderful!
