Acrobat X external object and image editing...

Hi,

I am using Acrobat X Pro on a Mac running system 10.5.8. I have been unable to get Acrobat to recognize Illustrator or Photoshop as external editors. They are both selected in the preference panel but when I try to invoke either one of them I get an error that says that Acrobat cannot start the editing application. The same error occurs whether I select CS5 or CS4 apps.

Do you have any ideas what is going on here?

Thanks,

Jim

Have had the same issue for a while.
Works fine in 9.4.2
Have pitstop installed as well.
Yesterday did a full uninstall/reinstall, of course nothing happened.

Plan on trying some other ideas today, will keep you updated.

I've dug into this issue and found that this is a known problem to Adobe. While Adobe is seeking a solution, they don't inspire a lot of confidence. They suggest going back to the originating document to make changes and further state that they expect resolution to come in the form of a version upgrade. I too, have gone back to version 9.4.2.

Upgrade 10.0.2 didn't solve the issue…

This is the link to this known issue from Adobe's site:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/884/cpsid_88477.php

My favorite part is under the "Additional Information" section:
"Adobe is aware of the issue, and hopes to have it addressed in a future release. In the meantime, Adobe is searching for possible workarounds. The best recommendation is to obtain the original source document and make your edits, then regenerate the PDF."

In my case, it is NOT an option to get the original source files and then regenerate a PDF. I'm trying to convert embedded RGB images to grayscale for a job that prints black and white. I do not have PitStop, so edit image was my go-to tool in these situations.

My current workaround is to export all the images, open them in PS to convert to grayscale, then use the edit object tool and place the revised image back in.

It's not a pretty solution, nor is it efficient, but it worked for what I needed to do.

Thanks Adobe!

momac - Is your entire document grayscale? If so, an easier fix would be to use the preflight panel. Under PDF Fixups there is a convert to grayscale option. I have a similar situation where I deal with PDF generated from a web site that includes some RGB characters and/or images. I've actually incorporated this funtion into a batch process that makes my life a lot easier.

Hope this helps!
