Acrobat X Pro - Scanner Issues

Answered

I have used Acrobat since ver 3.
Most recently I had ver 9 Pro installed and all features worked well.
Yesterday I installed Acrobat X Pro. That's when my problems began. I selected my HP scanner as before from the menu. The only scans that would work were custom scans using the scanner's pop-up interface. Attempts to scan any other way were met with a message indicating thatthe scan was cancelled. I tried to modify the setting within Acrobat to try to accommodate the device but to no avail. Frustrated, I uninstalled X and re-installed ver. 9 Pro which works well as before. I'll keep X on ice until a cure is found. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Marvin

The 7400 is not listed by HP as being compatible with Windows 7, so the exposed hardware driver is likely to be only showing Acrobat the basic TWAIN functions. Unless Acrobat detects the full range of driver functions it will disable the profile-based scan options and leave only Custom Scan, which in turn uses the native scanner software from HP to control the hardware directly.I suggest you contact HP for advice on driver compatibility.

That's odd since it works very well with Acrobat v9.
Thanks for your information.

Hi,
Your post implies you have different versions of Acrobat on the same box.
This can be something of an error precursor.
If you've version 9 and 10 together you may need to remove both then, after selecting which to use, install only one of them.

Be well...

Hi.
Thanks for your postings.
The installation of Acrobat X uninstalled Acrobat 9.
They were not running simultaneously.

Thanks!

Acrobat 9 was a little more accommodating with drivers, but it was also never officially compatible with Windows 7. Acrobat X does things "properly" and as a result some older hardware will have problems, which is why the Custom Scan option is always available to work via the native scanner software instead.

It makes sense. Well, the scanner is a bit old now. I suppose that it's a candidate for retirement.
I appreciate your insight and help.
Thanks!

I have an HP Color Laserjet CM1312 nfi and I have the same problem with Acrobat X Pro. I get a "scanning canceled" message every time I try to scan from Acrobat. This happens when using any of the pre-defined configurations or the custom scan option.
It worked well with version 9 and my HP printer is listed as Windows 7 (32 bit) compatible.
The printing from X Pro works fine, this is only for scanning documents.
From any other application I'm able to print and scan also.
I guess I will also go back to version 9 and hold the upgrade for a while.

Well.. I have to add my HP printer to the growing list of "scanning canceled" messages. It is HP lasterjet 3055. It's running on the win 7 pro with the 64 bit hp universal printer drive just released by HP last week. The same driver seems to be fine with all programs in our inventory including Adobe elements 8. This only way this application is going to "bring people together" is when they form into a line outside my door.

I am having a similar problem with a brand new machine and a Ricoh 2045 MFP Acrobat crashes every time I try to scan. The PC is running Windows 7 (64 bit) and the Ricoh driver is listed as being compatible with Windows 7. Any ideas?

Had the same problem with Acrobat X and my HP CM2320.
Solved it with help of Adobe chat. Trick is in selecting flat bed or paper feeder. Last is default.
In configuring pre-sets after selecting the scanner choose options.
Make sure it is set to native modus and show scanner interface. Save this.
Try adapted scan first, lets you choose between the flat bed or the paper feed.
Brings you to scanner's interface and scans.
Next time just select the scan function you want (not adapted).
Worked for me.

Thanks for your help I appreciate it.
As many scanning requirements have come up, I resorted to purchasing new scanner. Unfortunately could not find one with flatbed as long as the original one. Yes - I gave in.
Thanks to all who responded.

I have the same problem with Acrobat X, Windows 7, and an HP 5550c scanner, using pre-defined configurations or custom scan. No matter what I try, I get "scanning cancelled". HP says they are not updating the driver for my scanner for Windows 7. So I guess I just wasted my money on Acrobat X. Adobe can blame HP if they want, but the whole idea of Acrobat is that it works with a wide variety of formats and devices. Apparently, that's no longer true. Like everyone else, I'll revert to an older version of Acrobat which worked fine on this system. And of course, I'll stop upgrading Acrobat (as I've been doing since Acrobat 5).

I agree wholeheartedly with the other posters having scanning problem. Acrobat X has broken the scanning functionality. Acrobat 8 and 9 worked VERY well for us and we have thousands of documents successfully scanned with them. Acrobat X has partially stopped the workflow because of the scanning problems

I use several different scanners (different mfgrs, some new some old) and all of them exhibit the same problems. Acrobat X crashes when trying to do the back sides of pages. I have not been able to complete a back-side page scan since upgrade to Acrobat X.

Other random errors occur also, but this is the most pervasive one.

Since I am working in a historical society, scanning genealogy books, which are often printed front and back, this has effectively killed the workflow. I am afraid I will have to go back to Acrobat 9 because Acrobat X is a disaster.

Do this issue occur if you try changing the "User Interface" under "Scanner Options" from "Hide Scanner's Native Interface" to "Show Scanner's Native Interface when performing a custom scan? This option lets the scanner's driver operate the scanner.

One other suggestion for those folks experiencing the scanning canceled error is to go to File > Create PDF from Scanner > Custom > Show Native Interface and then change the setting for either Flatbed or ADF (Automatic Document Feeder). If it is set on Flatbed change it to ADF or vice versa.

Not knowing whether I should upgrade from 9 Pro to X Pro, are there any efforts or plans, either by Adobe or Microsoft to not restrict the functionality of all existing hardware that previously was working? For example, scanners, etc.

There are some neat things in X Pro, but I may need to scan other clients' forms.

To ensure compatibility with your existing scanning, you can always download the trial version of Acrobat X Pro.

The problem happens with Acrobat, not during scanning. It happens when Acrobat is waiting for input, at the more pages, backsides or complete prompt. The problem is that when you go to answer the prompt Acrobat crashes *immediately* when you click, or more often when you bring the prompt to the foreground if it has gone behind something else. Windows will say that Acrobat has stopped working, and that is that. Scan is lost and you have to start over.

The problem seems similar to another problem where if Acrobat is not in focus (foreground application) and it sits for a while, it will often, when you go to bring it to the foreground, display repeated "an internal error has occurred" messages and gets in a loop you usually cannot get out of.

It appears that Acrobat has some interaction problem with Windows, and cannot tolerate being in the background. For some reason this error manifests most reliably during back-side scanning.

I just installed Acrobat X in place of 8. With 8, scanning went well. Now, with X, scanning function is gone (get error "scanning canceled"). Same scanner (HP OfficeJet 5610)worked fine with 8. Am very dissapointed. Have updated all drivers. Will Adobe fix this? Any insights?

I have just upgraded to Acrobat X std from Acrobat 8 std on a Windows 7-32 machine scanning via USB from an HP ScanJet 5530. It worked fine with all the scan presets in 8, but only Custom scan via the native scanner window works with X.

Come-on Adobe, this is a backwards step. Please provide an update to fix this very soon.

I have acrobat 9.4.3 and was having the same issue with an Officejet 6500a and Win7 64bit. The device supports both wireless and usb, and I had it connected to this device via usb and that is when I had the troubles. If I connected the device through the network, adobe scanned pdf files correctly.

20 years wow - would that be Photoshop or Illustrator? Have you tried repairing your Acrobat X installation at all? Also, if it's not too much of a hassle, are you able to create a new Windows user account to see if this problem persists across Windows user profiles?

When I upgraded to Adobe Acrobat X Pro from version 9.
I can't scan from within Adobe Acrobat anymore.
I get the error meassage "Scanning Canceled", the first time it said "Bad parameter".

I have repaired the Adobe installation, didn't help.
I have updated the printer Firmware and drivers, didn't help.

Downgrade to Acrobat 9 Pro, works.

How can I get Acrobat X Pro to work with my Scanner?

My System: Windows 7 Ultimate (32-bit), HP Color LaserJet CM2320fxi, Adobe Acrobat X Pro. My NEW System: Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit), HP Color LaserJet CM2320fxi, Adobe Acrobat X Pro

As you have read in other threads, Acrobat X on Windows has a serious scanning problem with HP and possibly other scanners.

Whereas in Acrobat 9 scanning worked reasonably well, Acrobat X seems to be unable to cope with scanning documents from the flat bed of a multifunction scanner.

So, if you are scanning from the feeder, scanning works, but if you are scanning from the flatbed, you will get a brief pause and the phrase SCANNING CANCELLED.

This is, of course, not acceptable.

The problem is that Acrobat X does not play nicely with the scanner drivers. Previously, Acrobat 9 would "auto-detect" the source of a document, using the feeder if loaded, and "falling back" to the flatbed otherwise. However, Acrobat X does not fall back. If there is nothing loaded in the document feeder, the scan will be cancelled by Acrobat X.

The workaround - and I would NOT call this a "solution" - is to use only the "Custom Scan" command from Acrobat X. When the window pops up, choose the "Options" button and select "Native Mode" and "Show Scanner's Native Interface" from the two menus. (Acrobat X does seem to remember these settings at least within a session, so if you're scanning multiple documents you only need to do this once.) Then scan.

You will see a new window pop up - the scanner's "native interface." On my computer, this window shows up BEHIND the Acrobat X screen (annoyingly) so you have to watch for it and click forward. Be sure to select "flat bed" from the "document source" menu. On my computer, this setting is NOT remembered between scans, so you have to do this for EVERY SCAN. Then, the document will scan, and you can do what you want with it in Acrobat X.

Needless to say, this is a long, painful, slow process, especially if you're scanning lots of flatbed items, as I do. Hence it's a "workaround" and NOT a "solution".

I have just purchased and installed Acrobat X Pro 10.0.3 "Student and Teacher Edition," and am running on a iMac under OSX 10.5.8. I have an Epson Perfection 2580 Photo Scanner and have not been able to use it with the Adobe product. I read your post and tried to follow your suggestion. First, my version of Acrobat X does not show any options beyond File > Create PDF from Scanner; there is not a "Custom" option available. Is that something I set in preferences? Or is it something to do with the "Student and Teacher Edition?"The scanner selection window in "File > Create PDF from Scanner" does not allow me to select my scanner. Worse, Acrobat somehow renders my scanner unavailable to the Epson native scanner software, unless I reboot my system. The Epson software thinks the scanner isn't connected. After I reboot, I can run the Epson scanning software and save the document as a .pdf, which I can then open with Acrobat X, but please, no one could call this acceptable. My scanner has worked perfectly with earlier versions of Acrobat. I guess I can always go back to the earlier version, which is still installed, and return the two copies of X I bought but I hate to do that. I hope you can help me.

Update. I got some good technical support via Adobe chat. I allowed the tech to share my desktop. I ended up going to the Epson site and installing the updates and latest drivers -- duh! I got my scanner back, but have to use the native Epson scanner application to scan documents, then open them with Acrobat X. An extra step but not a show stopper. Acrobat X Pro still cannot see my scanner. I wonder if it would make any difference if I deinstalled Pro X, reinstalled the Epson updates, then re-installed Pro X.

I am having the same problem with Acrobat X. I have W7 64, with a HP Photosmart C7280 and am trying to get the scanner working properly. I can get the Custom Scan feature to work - but as mentioned above, the dialogue box appears BEHIND the Acrobat window. Is there a fix to correct this display of the window? It is very frustrating.

I am using Vista with a Kodak printer. I too have used Adobe Pro for many years and now have installed Pro X and I am having scanner problems too. I can't spend any more hours trying to get this to work. I have tried changing the native interface with no results. I need this fixed or my money returned.

I spent about an hour and a half on the Chat with an Adobe tech and it is fixed!!!!! She moved a twain_32 driver to my desktop. She said it was conflicting with the Adobe and it has worked all night. I am thrilled!!!

We have experienced the same problem with Scanning canceled. Are working on Mac OS X with Acrobat X and HP 3055 scanner.
One page is fine but when I choose "Finish" only the first page is saved. Any advice for MAC?

Just upgraded to Mac OSX lion and Acrobat X with Canon MF4680. Has been working fine with v9 but now it'll scan, only to get black/blank pages. It's definitely a adobe issue, not an OS issue. Doesn't like ANY system. Has anyone come up with a work around?

Custom Scan was a known bug in Acrobat X and should now be fixed in the 10.1.1 update (released on September 13, 2011).

I have Acrobat X V10.1.1 on Win 7 Professional 64-bit and trying to scan with a Canon ImageRunner 5000iR using Canon's ScanGear 2.20 software. I'm getting the error: The program can't start because NSIOPM.dll is missing from your computer.

NSIOPM is in the Scan Gear directory. Both Acrobat and Scan Gear are under c:\Program Files (x86)

Any ideas?

Thanks.

JS CPA,

This looks like a DLL error. Can you re-install your scanner software? Also, some sites recommend running a registry cleaner to fix this issue (I don't have personal experience with this file, so I'm not sure if that will do the trick).

HP ALL-IN-ONE SCAN PROBLEM WITH ACROBAT **WHEN NETWORKED**

PLEASE can someone help? I've never signed up to one of these before, but I'm at wit's end!!

I have an HP OfficeJet 7410 (yeah, it's 5 years old, but state-of-the-art) and I've used both Adobe Acrobat 8 Pro and now Adobe Acrobat X Pro. This is my sad issue:

When connected via USB:

All works well. I can scan multiple-page documents without issue, front, back, the Bible, doesn't matter, either version of Acrobat.

When connected via network (wired AND/OR wireless):

Acrobat 8 Pro:
After one page is scanned, additional page will cause a "scan cancelled" error. I then have to restart Acrobat to continue scanning...after each page.

Acrobat X Pro:
After one page is scanned, additional page will cause a "scan cancelled" eror. I have to restart BOTH Acrobat AND OfficeJet to continue scanning...after each page.

This happens with BOTH WinXP AND Win7 (never used Vista, and don't plan to). I have the latest drivers installed from HP. All other printer functions are flawless.

Any ideas, mes amis???

PLEASE HELP!! This is a $500 machine that I can't afford to replace.

NOTE: YES, Acrobat has been fully updated in all instances.

I have tried all of the suggestions posted and appreciate those who have responded. I have shelved the HP scanner and will only, underscored only, bring it out when I need ADF functions. I've replaced it with a Mustek flatbed, non ADF unit. That scanner seems to communicate well with WIN7 and Acrobat-X.
Many thanks!

I am running OS-X 10.7.2 and Acrobat Pro 9.4.6.

I have two network scanners attached. One HP 7300 and one EPSON Workforce 630. Other apps, such as Preview can detect and scan from both of these, so it is not a driver problem. Neither are detected in the Acrobat Scan dialog. The Scanner pull down does not list either of these network scanners, nor offer to locate them. Is there some configuration I am missing? I did note the same behavior in Acrobat Pro X on another machine (OS-X 10.6.8). Is it that strange to have a networked attached printer/scanner? Both Acrobat Pro 7 and 8 detected my network attached 7300 when running under Windows XP. Does Adobe really hate Apple that much to break things in Mac versions?

For a product that got it's start by supporting scanning (I've been using Acrobat since v3), this is ridiculous.

There is a long list of things that have changed in OS X Lion (10.7.x), not simply with Adobe Products. Here is the known issues for Adobe products with Lion (but almost every software vendor has a note about their product being updated to work with Lion). This page provides more detail on things that Apple changed in the Operating System, that may help understand why there is a conflict:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/905/cpsid_90508.php

Adobe (and me personally) loves Apple. We are both leaders for the design community. Software engineering is always a tricky thing. When one company makes major changes, all the other companies have to work hard to make sure they operate well together. Adobe is constantly striving to make sure that their software plays well with the thousands of other applications it interacts with.

For the Windows users posting problems with scanning, please list your exact Acrobat version (and Operating System version). As stated above, there was a fix in Custom Scan in Acrobat 10.1.1. If you haven't upgraded, you are fighting a solved problem.

Several users reported fixing the issue after contacting tech support. In each case it was an issue with how the drivers were configured, not Acrobat itself.

Thanks Kelly, I agree with you about OS-X Lion (10.7.2). Lots of changes. But the problem I reported also presents for OS-X Snow Leopard (10.6.8). Further, the link about Lion issues has nothing regarding scanning problems--the issues described are with Safari plugins which really is old news. Is there a bug report for not detecting network scanners for either Snow Leopard or Lion?

Nope, nothing wrong. Adobe help desk in stilted English told me that Adobe Acrobat Pro does not support network scanners on OS-X (and I assume other OS' that rely on the programs that have embedded twain drivers). Hard to believe. But that is what they told me and then closed my problem report before I could ask another question. Glad that their closure stats are intact.

All the software on my iMac sees and can use my network scanner *except* Adobe Acrobat Pro (v9 and X, anyway). Works great on win machines. Even works great on Windows running in a virtual environment--go figure. So I cannot use Acrobat for what I purchased it for without a workaround. Oh, and BTW the scanner is not seen on my wife's Snow Leopard iMac, either.

My workaround is time consuming and a crock of BS and caused by a company at war with Apple. Great. Apple will win as we desert Adobe products like I am planning. To me failing to support modern home network architectures to perform tasks that Acrobat pioneered, is ludicrous--just plain silly. I have made my last purchase of Acrobat Pro.

Cheers!
