In Acrobat 8 Pro, I am attempting to insert Bates numbers using Advanced > Document Processing > Bates Numbering > Add.
The message returned on all my files is that this function cannot be performed on this file because it is "protected".
I have attempted to remove whatever protection may exist on the files.
The files were never password protected.
The files all originated as scanned paper documents.
I ran a batch sequence and removed all security and tried the Bates feature again, but no success, same message, i.e., can't Bates number because 'protected'.
I am not even clear on what 'protected' means at this point (because I removed all security on the files and never took steps to affirmatively protect documents) and have less of a clue as to how to remove the mysterious 'protection'.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

An interesting problem, Harry. I suggest you check out the document's contents. Choose Document > Examine Document to see what is lurking in the file and remove it. There may be content from other programs, hidden data, and so on that are preventing your file from behaving.donna.
