Hi we are using Adobe Acrobat Pro v9 to assemble large PDF documents from MS Word, other PDFs, scanned documents, and RTF files containing an assortment of graphics. The documents are huge, > 14,000 pages and > 500MB. The 14K pages need to have a TOC, page numbering, headers, etc. throughout the document. We just manage to get the job done with a Windows XP OS with 3.5GB of RAM. My question is there a better platform to get better and more reliable performance when working with documents this size? Is Windows 7 64bit with more memory or perhaps the latest MAC OS better? Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

So, the 'extra juice' associated with 64-bit is not applicable.
Another consideration is the graphic/video card for each local machine used.
A dedicated vice integrated to mother board is better.
Get a card with a generous amount of onboard memory.
With such a large document set, going forward you may want to revisit the unspoken major premise.
That is the use of word processor to be the "authoring" application.
I suspect FrameMaker would make the work flow 'cleaner'.
It certainly did for me .Be well...
