First of all I am running Vista.

I am having a problem with some PDF attachments in email & some PDF links on a website.

Some of them are blank when I open them. I don't know if this is a Vista problem or if I did something wrong.

Please help.

My Product Information:
Reader 8.1.1, Windows

Hi MeasureMe,

Have you tried to save these PDFs first and then open them from the file explorer window? (Right Click, Save-As) Try that and if it does not work post again. I've had the same problem sometimes and this has always worked for me, but I don't know what the problem is that causes it.

Hope that helps,

Hi MeasureMe,

Can you provide a link to one of the problem PDFs?

If the fonts used in the PDF are not available on your system and the creator did not embed them you can have blank pages. Look at the PDF's properites and see if any of the fonts are embedded.

This most often happens with a PDF createed on a PC and viewed on a Mac.

The real solution is for the creator to embed a subset of the fonts in the PDF.

https://www.nysdot.gov/portal/page/portal/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/traffic-operations-section/highway-permits

This is the link.

I'm trying to open permit 33: " HWP Application for Non-Utility Work (PERM 33 08/01) "

Also, where would I find the "properties" for that particular document?

Hi again MeasureMe,

I was able to download and open this PDF from that link in both Acrobat 7 Pro and Adobe Reader 8.1, but it does perform poorly. All 6 pages are scanned images so there are no fonts used/listed. It was scanned with a very high resolution which causes it to load and render slowly, and it was not set for Fast Web View so the whole PDF must download first before you see anything at all. Form fields were added to the last two fill-in pages. No Application is listed in the document properites (in Reader under File->Properties) so this was not created with Acrobat but some other PDF maker tool.
Did you give this file a decent length of time to load before giving up? The images are highly compressed and if you have a slow connection maybe you just gave up too fast.

In any case, you should contact the NY DOT and let them know the trouble you are having. Optimizing the PDF would help out the performance a lot.

Hope that helps,

Thanks for your help. I will try to open this again and let is sit for a while.

Question: Do you know why it is that I am the only one in the office with this problem? The others have pc's and some even have the Vista program. Yet I am the only one that is having this problem.

Hi MeasureMe,

That is a good clue. Check under Edit->Preferences-> Page Display in the area labeled Page Content and Information- do you have "Show Large Images" checked? If not, check it and then try to load the form again. The form is pretty much just huge images so this could be the cause of the problem.Hope that helps,
