Can't Embed PDFs in Excel with Reader X

I am running Excel 2007 in Windows 7. Ever since Reader X (ver 10.0) was installed, I haven't been able to attach PDFs to Excel documents, nor can I open any previously embedded PDFs in existing Excel documents. To embed a new PDF, I am using "Insert-Object-Create From File" then when I select a PDF document, it comes back with an error message saying, "Cannot insert object". When I try opening a previously embedded PDF in an existing Excel file, I get an error message that says, "Cannot start the source application for this object". I am not having trouble embedding or opening other file types - this has only affected PDFs.

My Product Information:
Reader, Windows

I would suggest using the Help > Repair Adobe Reader Installation to see if it corrects the problem.

I have the same problem with Excel 2003 in Windows XP. In Word2003 I get the message "This object was created in AcroExch. This application is not available to open this object..." I tried Repair Adobe Reader and then uninstalling and reinstalling without success. Do I have to go back to Reader 9?

Would really like to know an answer for this. I have same problem on my work computer. Excel 2007, Win 7, Reader X. Can't embed Excel documents or open ones others have embedded. Similarly can't embed pdf into Word or PowerPoint. No problem inserting pdf files or opening in Outlook 2007 though. Tried to repair Reader install. No change to errors. Checked registry entry mentioned elsewhere HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{B801CA65-A1FC-11D0-85AD-444553540000}\LocalServer32 which in this case properly points to "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 10.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe" which appears OK. Would like to know what else to try. I don't believe I have any other Acrobat version on my work computer (only a few months old).

Error when trying to embed into Excel 2007:
Cannot insert object.
Error when trying to embed into Word 2007:
The program used to create this object is AcroExch. That program is not installed on your computer. To edit this object, you must install a program that can open the object.
Error when trying to embed into PowerPoint 2007:
The server application, source file, or item can't be found, or returned an unknown error. You may need to reinstall the server application.

I have been able to embed all kinds of other objects from files (with Display as Icon) but just not pdf files. Seems like a number of people have had trouble with this but I haven't found any solutions yet. Any help would be appreciated.

Note that my home computer with Excel 2010, Win 7, Acrobat pro 9 works fine with both embedding pdf into Excel and opening but I need it to work on my work computer.

Hi. i have also experienced this problem. I was trying to embed a PDF file in excel 2010, with adobe X, when i get the following message:

'Cannot insert object'

When trying to embed the same PDF in a word 2010 document i get:

'The progrma used to create this object is AcroExch. That program is either not installed on your computer or it is not repsondind. To edit this object install AcroExch or ensure that any dialog boxes in ArcoExch are closed'

Unfortunately reverting to version 9 of adobe did not fix the problem in this instance. any help would be appreciated.

Regards

Adobe Reader X has a brand-new-to-Reader setting called "Protected Mode".
This must be disabled in order for Excel to be able to insert PDFs into a
spreadsheet.

Disable "Protected Mode" this way:
Go to Edit > Preferences > General, then UNcheck the box that says
"Enable Protected Mode on Startup".

I also went back to reader 9.0 and everything works fine now.

Not in a hurry to try Reader X again and disabling the protected mode to see if that works.

I too had the problems described above and I too went back to Reader 9. Everything is working fine except Reader X. I hope Adobe management takes note of the same problems we all experienced and fixes the problems in Reader X. Until then I guess it's so long Reader X.

Thanks. I have Excel files at work that have PDF files embeded in them by a previous version of Acrobat. I was able to expand the file by right clicking on the file. Since upgarding to Acrobat Reader X I haven't been able to do that until coming across this tip. Thanks again. You've saved my files.........Tony

But doesn't turning off Protected Mode defeat the purpose? Adobe, if you are monitoring this forum, what's the answer that doesn't make our systems vulnerable to bad PDFs?
Thanks,

I am receiving the same ArcoExch error but I am using Acrobat Pro 9.0. Has anyone found a fix for this? I Changing the protection mode that is the fix for Reader doesn't appear to be an option for Acrobat Pro 9.0.
